Match Report by Allan Hefferon
As with previous games, Bearsted were unable to cement their first win of the season. Once more although not playing particularly badly, they failed to make the most of good chances. By the same token conceding goals following slack defending. Indeed it was as a result of two such catastrophes that their opponents were able to exploit, that they went on to win the game. Certainly early exchanges suggested that this would be a close encounter as both sides fought for midfield dominance. However, Bearsted were to go in front after 20 minutes following a long throw from Charlie Epps, which was headed on by Rob Lyall into the path of Kennon Mooney, for him to thrash the ball home high into the net. Unfortunately Bears’ celebrations were to last only 2 minutes, when a mistimed back pass left goalkeeper Thomas Taylor floundering in his efforts to prevent Leigh Bremner shooting into an empty net. Somewhat stunned by this, the visitors found it difficult to establish any real creativity and may well have gone behind during this spell, when both Ainsley Everett and Aaron Jeffery went close with decent strikes.
The second half presented more of the same with play remaining fairly even, only being marred by the sight of Cray’s Everett being stretchered off with a dislocated shoulder. However the introduction of Richie Hamell did prove to be effective and after 63 minutes, when a poor clearance by the keeper was seized upon and sent back over his head and into the net. As time wore on and following some tactical changes, so Bearsted found themselves on top and looking likely to get an equaliser, not least of all when a Tom Brown corner was volleyed towards goal by Lyall only for him to be denied by a great save by goalkeeper Jordan Carey. However the real drama was left until immediately before the final whistle when Lyall headed on, sending Sam Flisher clear on goal and for him to fire narrowly wide of goal leaving his side empty handed.
