Match Date: 07 January 2017
This was a game that throughout the first half of was very much in the balance and although both sides did go close, it took a penalty in the second half to affect the momentum of the tie. Certainly it was the visitors who looked like they might have gone in front soon after the start, when Tom Youngs found himself clear in on goal only to be deprived by a fine low save by advancing goal keeper Scott Andrews. However equal to that, Bearsted also should have gone in front when A Luke Hughes cross from the right eluded keeper Jordan Carey to find Keelan Mooney to head agonisingly wide of an unprotected net. As the half wore on so the play was end to end with Cray midfielder Peter Smith looking particularly prominent and for the home side a series of corners produced a number of potential goal scoring efforts.
Following the break so the game remained in the balance, but unfortunately for the Bears the real game changer came after 60 minutes, when they suffered a penalty decision given against them after when the a ball struck the arm of Neil Perkins, the result of which allowing Youngs to step up to send the ball down the middle into the net from the spot. With the home side now having to push on for an equaliser, so they were able to put the pressure onto their opponent's backline and they were most unfortunate not to equalise when a goal bound effort from Mooney was deflected over the bar off of a defender's head. Unfortunately for them though the game and the result did eventually get beyond them, when being caught on the break down the left side resulted in Denzel Gayle steering the ball home past Andrews fifteen minutes from time. Although the home response as the clock wore down was admirable, the game was put beyond all doubt when a miss-placed pass from midfield was intercepted and to be dispatched to Leigh Bremner for him to run on and score with only minutes remaining.
