Match Report by Allan Hefferon
Certainly this was a game that Bearsted should not have lost, but in mitigation they were very unlucky to have lost their two key central defenders in the first half and later front man Peter Williams in the second through injury, with a broken foot. Without any suggestion of sour grapes the impact structurally on them was a real set back. During the early stages play was end to end, with the prompting of Glebe’s Elyon Marshall-Katung and the pace of their wingman Fred Obasa looking particularly threatening. However for Bearsted it was not creating real problems for their defence. Indeed the real chances did fall to the visitors, particularly when Matt Garner and Williams did not make the most of close range headed opportunities. Unfortunately it was as a result of a clearance from one of these attacks, that the ball found Sidney Walden free on the right to run on before cutting in to lob the ball from distance over the advancing Ben Donnelly shortly before half time.
Following the break so the opportunity for Glebe to dominate this game was a real prospect, which never really happened? Of course they did have their moments, but generally they chose to stay compact in defending their lead. For Bearsted, they had no alternative but to try to push on in search of an equaliser, during which time forcing a series of good saves from Adam Molloy and seeing a goal bound drive by Michael Holliday being scrambled off of the line. Unfortunately for them though it was as a result of this melee that striker Williams was forced to go off with an ankle injury. As with the first goal, against the momentum of play, the ball broke clear before being sent to the edge of the penalty area for Ryan Golding to produce an overhead kick forcing a great save by Donnelly onto the bar before coming down and drop agonisingly over the goal line. Although the visitors reply was very positive far too often they found themselves either not making the most of their crosses or the chances that fell to them. So in conclusion whilst wishing Glebe well in the next round Bearsted can only rue their luck on the day.
