Match Date: 15 January 2017
The freezing, dismal conditions weren't likely to dampen our spirits because our Bearsted U13s have been playing to a very high standard recently.
Alas, lady luck was definitely not on our side today!
We started the game well, pushing forward and playing in our dangerous wide players.
However, their first goal came early on, from the first corner of the match, after only 10 minutes. The wet, muddy ball flew in from high, slipped through our keeper's hands and onto the head of their forward who didn't know much about it.
It wasn't long before they managed to notch an unlikely second past us (between our own chances to score). Pinball inside our area and our defenders dozing off to sleep allowed their midfielder to smash home a ball which could've hit Row Z.
It sounds crazy to say it but we were still more than holding our own in the game, but for those two fateful moments, and we soon grabbed one back when Alfie Caesar drove home a powerful half-volley at the second time of asking.
The rub of the green eluded us still though, when Leo Dunk (who had terrorised their right full-back since kick off) cut inside into the area. About to pull the trigger, he was clipped by a clumsy attempted tackle from the side.....NO PENALTY!
Their manager half-heartedly agreed with their referee but there was no doubt in anybody's mind that it was not the referee's finest moment. Their coach came over to agree that it was a clear-cut penalty kick too, but when Lady Luck is not on your side those things never go your way.
We rallied and fought back bravely, dominating parts of the second half and looking hungry after the penalty shout.
Then, from another Ditton corner, our unlucky defender volleyed his clearance into the top corner of his own net.
Again we came back, intent and looking likely to come back into the game but we left it too late.
One final consolation goal (a well-struck finish by Oscar Mulligan) made the score more respectable, but it still did not reflect the true nature of the game.
