Match Report by Allan Hefferon

The draw for this game brought together two teams who over the years had produced many close encounters and on this occasion that proved to be the case. Certainly from the start it was apparent that the movement of the visitor’s front man Stuart Zanone was always likely be a cause for concern. Indeed it was not very long after that he managed to find himself in on goal only to see his shot pass narrowly wide. However after 9 minutes it was Bearsted who were to take the lead, when a Keelan Mooney corner was touched on by Neil Perkins for Reece Collins to fire into the net from close range. As the game progressed so the play swung from end to end and with 20 minutes gone Lydd found themselves level following a run across the box, James Everit sent in a shot deflected low into the net past Bearsted keeper Ben Donnelly. With the game now throwing up chances at both ends it was the visitors who were to go in front, when a free kick from the edge of the area by Ryan Smith found the back net just before the half time break.
Following the interval it took the Bears only 6 minutes to level the score, when a Sam Flisher run and cross picked out Andy Hart to tuck the ball home from close range past keeper Dan Cook. Unfortunately for them though the situation did not last long when full back Kieran Sanger picked the ball up deep on the left to send in a shot from 30 yards, which somehow eluded Donnely and find its’ way into the net. Fortunately for them though that the hosts were able to once more pull a goal back after 64 minutes when a low right wing corner was not properly dealt with, which in turn allowed Rob Lyall to steal in and score from close range. So now with all to play for so both sides going went close on numerous occasion, but the prize did eventually go to Bearsted when the ball came back to Hart on the edge of the area for him to lob onto the bar for it to fall sweetly to Collins to add his second of the afternoon. Although nerves did jangle right up until the final whistle, special mention must go to Lyall for an imperious defensive performance which ultimately saw his side go into the next round.
