Under 18s Match ReportDover Athletic vs Bearsted19.03.2017
Bearsted travelled to Dover for their final game of the 2016/17 season hoping to pick up a win following two successive losses. This would potentially be the last game for the boys as a team so this upped the ante even more. Bearsted started extremely poorly in the first fifteen minutes of the game and following a defensive error they found themselves 1-0 down. A drop-kick which Bearsted failed to deal with led to the ball sliding the Dover striker through on goal and to his credit – finished the move off well.
Despite the early pressure Bearsted were able to fight their way back into the game following some good work down the line from Ryan Golding who managed to direct his cross toward the back-post. This prompted the Dover keeper to attack the ball, however, due to a challenge from his own teammate he fumbled the ball which fell to the feet of Callum West who did excellently to finish on the turn with his weak foot.
Bearsted continued piling on the pressure and were soon rewarded when Luke Snazel swung in a brilliant corner which Callum MacGregor met at the far post with great force to head back across goal into the opposite corner.
Bearsted started the second-half how they finished the first; controlling possession and creating multiple chances. The first chance of the half would fall to Will Richards who was able to direct a ricocheting ball toward goal and this would have put the Bears 3-1 up had it not been for the quick reflexes of the Dover keeper. The chances continued to flow for the away side with West and Snazel coming close to adding another goal to the away side’s tally.
A change in tactics meant that Bearsted allowed more freedom for Joe Sturrock who had entered the field of play seconds before. Dover were penalised for a high foot on Edoardo Cammarano who whipped an excellent freekick into the box which Sturrock did well to get on the end of and head home convincingly. Bearsted continued to dominate the game and weren’t really allowing Dover to get a foothold in the game. Bearsted thought they had added a fourth when Will Richards flew past the Dover backline and passed the ball across to Sturrock who somehow managed to smash the ball over the bar from 3 yards out – the midfielder slumped to floor in disbelief and claimed the ball bobbled…
A final chance would fall to Bearsted prior to the final whistle when Snazel was able to breeze past his defender and get a shot away which the Dover keeper was only able to parry into the path of Cammarano who gladly accepted the invitation to tap the ball into an empty net a couple yards out from the goal.
A solid end to a great season, however, Bearsted will ultimately feel rather disappointed with their league form in 2017. Having won 6 of their first 7 games Bearsted were looking on course to a league title, unfortunately they completely capitulated in the second-half of the season. Nevertheless, a respectable cup run would possibly make up for the frustrating league form. Overall, a really enjoyable season and one the Bears will never forget.
