First Team vs AFC Croydon Athletic

Match Date: 26 August 2017
Score: 0-0

Bearsted were certainly the team who were to have started more brightly and could well have gone in front after just 3 minutes when Reece Collins latched onto a through ball from Lucian Scarlat, to send over a cross finding Constantine Scarlat, only for him to be denied by away goalkeeper Francis Ameyaw, turning the ball around for a corner. However immediately after this it was Charlie Epps sending in a low drive that past narrowly wide of the post. With the momentum now still with the hosts, so a breakthrough seemed inevitable and this time seemed to have arrived when Scarlat sent in a volley from 12 yards, only to see his effort turned over once more by a Ameyaw wonder save. At the same time though they still had to be mindful of being caught on the break and this very nearly happened when a ball from deep put Nahum Green in on goal, only to see his effort turned around by a fine near post save by Scott Andrews. As the half wore on though, so Croydon began to get more into the game and prompted on by Morgan Jender, began to create several chances of their own, notably when Green lobbed over an advancing Andrews and then when Edison Teberen shot just wide just before the half time break.
Following the interval the game remained a very tight affair, during which time seeing chances fall to both Collins and for the visitors Emmanual Oloyede. Although as the game went on it seemed to be Croydon who were looking to become more dominant and testing the competence of the Bear’s defence who in turn, more than answered that question. However it was during this period that the hosts were to be reduced to 10 men when Ryan Croucher was dismissed for what appeared to be a questionable second yellow card and although now having to accommodate for this for the remainder of the game, they were able to produce the steel that was required of them in order to get something out of this match. Indeed late on they almost went in front when a persistent Scarlat was able to hook a cross in from the left causing confusion in the visitor’s defence, which allowed Collins to head home only for him to see his goal bound effort scrambled away by a somewhat improvised Ameyaw save for a corner. However, this was not to be the final piece of drama, as with only minutes remaining, parity in the sides was restored when Teberen was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Cameron Croucher, to also bringing to an end his further involvement. With the final whistle now arriving so either side might have felt they should have won? But at the end of the day they could be satisfied with sharing the points?
