First Team vs Lordswood

Match Date: 28 August 2017
Score: 1-2

At the final whistle Bearsted could only stare at a result which for so long had looked quite unlikely. However they could only rue the fact that they had been punished against the run of play and being caught cold by direct balls from deep, the result of which exploiting a lapse of concentration. Although Scott Andrews was forced into having to produce an immediate save palming away a header from Jordan Wells, the visitors soon began to settle into a pattern of play likely to win the game. Indeed it took them only 7 minutes to open the score when a long throw from the right by Ryan Croucher was not dealt with sufficiently, allowing Cat Scarlet to fire into the bottom corner of the net. This goal did signal the likelihood of the game being settled before half time and so much so, that it was only due to series of great missed opportunities that the game was not out of sight by the half time break. However this said, they were to be punished by some ill positional discipline, when an attack on goal was thwarted by a direct long ball from defence, finding Liam Newton out on the left to run on and to send the ball across Andrews and into the net after 28 minutes.
Following the break so the balance of play remained very similar, although by the same token Lordswood now were able to enjoy more of the play of their own, but not at this time creating too many goal scoring threats. For Bearsted, they continued to produce chances, notably when both Reece Collins and Ryan Croucher, unfortunately for them were denied by a both a deflection and the outstretched leg of goalkeeper Ryan Chandler who as the game went on played a significant part in keeping the scorline intact. Although the visitor’s continued to mount their attacks none of them produced an end product. And as a result of combination of frustration and playing against a home defence now growing in confidence, so the result still remained in the balance. Remarkably though following a cross into the box, Chandler was able to claim the ball before sending his kick the full length of the pitch and in similar circumstances, Jack Mahon found himself in a position to score the goal that ultimately was to win the game and all three points.
