First Team vs AFC Croydon Athletic

Match Date: 13 January 2018
Score: 1-2

By Allan Hefferon

As with previous weeks Bearsted found themselves coming away with nothing after putting in a performance equally as good as their opponents. This time they were not helped by the fact of having to field a side seriously ravaged by injury prior to the run up of this game. Their hopes then were not notably improved when within the space of 10 minutes they were to fall behind by two goals scored by home front man Emanuel Oloyede both as a result of self inflicted errors. At this point the thought of a rout might have been excusable, but these were dispelled 6 minutes later when a neat though ball by Lucian Scarlat caught a flat Croydon back line unable to prevent Cat Scarlat running in on goal to lob the ball over advancing goalkeeper Dan Burnett into an empty net. As a result of this success the visitors now managed to settle into a decent shape and style of play that was now countering the more physical and more direct style of their opponents. Indeed an equaliser very nearly came about when Matt Garner broke down the right only to see his effort cleared off of the line which in turn triggered a series chances only being denied by some desperate defending.

Immediately after the have time break it was Bearsted who thought that they had got their reward when Scarlat outpaced his marker Ibrahim Kallon before forcing a fine save by Burnett, only for the ball to be sent back in allowing Scarlat to score only to see his effort disallowed for offside. With the game now very much in the balance so the style and momentum remained the same with chances occurring at both ends and although as the game was coming to a conclusion so Croydon Croydon’s wide men were becoming a real threat and might have well sealed the game but on several occasions they only had themselves to blame due to a tendency of overzealous shots on goal.
This t This said though it is the points that count which at the end of the day left Bearsted finding themselves once more narrowly missing out.
