First Team vs Sheppey Utd

Match Date: 10 March 2018
Score: 2-O

By A. Hefferon

From the opening whistle it was the visitors who started the brightest and on numerous occasions were able to exploit the home side’s backline as they struggled to cope with, in particular, the through balls that were being directed at them. Indeed within the first 5 minutes Bearsted should have opened the scoring, first when Constantine Scarlat went close and then Reece Collins, clear on goal was denied by a smart save by Joshua Glover. However though they thought that they had eventually gone in front when a free kick by Sam Flisher found the head of Rob Lyall, looping the ball over Glover into the net, only to see his effort being denied by a linesman’s flag. As play wore on so the momentum remained the same with Sheppey seemingly finding it difficult to present some meaningful build up play. However after 22 minutes Bearsted were to go in front, when following a right wing corner Lyall rose to send the ball firmly into the back of the net. This goal did somewhat inspire a decent response with the midfield energy of Jake Mahoney and the wing play of Timmy Babbington and Stephan Cox being of particular note. Surprisingly enough though, it was not until the 36th minute when a run into the area by Dan Bradshaw saw him in on goal only to see his shot saved by Scott Andrews from point blank range. However as the clock ran down towards half time the Bears defence remained resolute and in no mood to surrender their lead.

Following the break so the balance of play became more even with Sheppey able to seize more of the play and seek out the potential danger of their wide men Babbington and Cox. Soon after though it was Bearsted who should have gone further ahead, when as a result of a failed attack the ball was sent up to Lucian Scarlat to take on Tom Brunt before crossing into the path of Collins to force a save from Glover instead of finding the back of the net. Almost immediately after at the other end saw a similar situation when Bradshaw saw his goal bound effort saved once more by Andrews. Buoyed by this, so the hosts began to create a series of dangerous opportunities, one of which saw an effort by Babbington hitting the bar. Soon after Andrews once more had to be on hand deflecting another shot by Bradshaw into the side netting. On top of this, soon after his introduction into the game Hicham Akhazzan sent in a fierce drive from the edge of the area only for him to be robbed by the crossbar. Unfortunately for home side, having to commit themselves to going forward to save the game, the threat of being punished on the break always remained likely which on occasions did present itself. So much so that after 91minutes the ball broke to David Baranowski for him to send Ehis Izokun clear down the middle before switching the ball to Peter Williams for him to slam the ball past Glover and seal the game.
