Tonight’s game was played in difficult circumstances, due to the sudden and tragic passing of Carolyn Andrews.

Report By A. Hefferon

Although this game was played on a particularly sombre evening, Sheppey could take great comfort from having gained the rare experience of beating Bearsted after various efforts over past seasons. Another unusual point worth note is that although play was well contested it ran for 14 minutes before the first free kick was awarded, certainly another rarity in this day and age. With both sides being guilty of misplaced passes it was the visitors who were to go close during the opening stages seeing both George Batten and Tommy Babbington firing narrowly wide. Whereby Bearsted were far too often guilty of not being able to provide the final pass likely to create any real threat of opening the scoring. Indeed they had to thank their goalkeeper Matt Blundell for two consecutive point blank saves from both Dan Bradshaw and Babbibgton once more. However he could do very little about a Bradshaw strike from the edge of the area after 30 minutes and allow his side to take this lead into the half time break.

Following the restart though, it was Bearsted who were to gradually seize the initiative and on numerous occasions were to put their opponents under real pressure, during which time away keeper Joshua Glover was able to keep his side in the game, first when turning a well struck Ethis Izoku shot around the post and then when palming over a fierce drive by Sam Flisher over the bar from 10 yards after a run on goal into the box. They did though think they had finally got their reward when Reece Collins rose from within a ruck of defenders to head home a Ryan Croucher free kick, only for his effort being ruled out by a linesman’s flag. So the momentum was to continue and a goal seemed inevitable? This indeed proved to be the case, but not one that was expected and after having lost possession out on the right, the ball was swiftly sent over a back-peddling backline to find young substitute Alfie Bates for him to run on goal and send the ball past Blundell and ultimately win the game.
