First Team vs Sevenoaks Town

Match Date: 23 December 2017
Score: 0-1

Any thoughts by Sevenoaks that this game was going to be an easy ride were dispelled immediately after the kick off, when within the space of a couple minutes Bearsted very nearly had the ball in the net, first when Constantine Scarlet went narrowly wide and then when home keeper Ben Bridell-Card came to the rescue saving from Reece Collins from close range. With the home side’s more direct play, the visitor’s defence had to be mindful of the wing runs of Harrison Carnegie and Tom Youngs and having to maintain a good shape. This they did admirably in dealing with the goal threats presented to them. Unfortunately though they were punished after 34 minutes, when a rare lack of concentration allowed Francis Sawyer enough time to send the ball past Scott Andrews into the net. Interestingly enough though, any thoughts of this signalling a potential rout, this was to be far from the truth. Indeed this proved quite the opposite as the Bears remained undaunted and as half time loomed they continued their style of play and a minute before half time nearly saw an equaliser when Collins was once more denied by some improvised defending.
The start of the second half did see the hosts reappearing in a positive way immediately forcing two corners, one of which seeing a chance fall to Byron Walker, sending the ball wide of the mark. Bearsted though remained determined and seeing their balanced passing play gradually getting to their opponents whose backline now had to adapt to a spell of opportunities from which an equaliser looked inevitable, notably when a Lucian Scarlat seized the ball wide on the edge of the area to thunder the ball against the bar via the finger tips of Bridell-Card. With the game now coming to a conclusion the game remained in the balance and although on the break Sevenoaks did pose a threat on the break, they would have been very relieved at the final whistle that they were able to come out of this game with all three points.
