Under 14's KYL vs Greenway Aces

Match Date: 01 October 2017
Score: 3-2

Having a grass pitch is a novelty these days for The Bears as this was the first game of the season they have played on a natural surface but they settled in quickly and looked the stronger side for the first 10 minutes. But Greenways had their fair share of chances but nothing that tested The Bears defensive line. At the other end of the pitch Greenways were holding their own against the attacks but Zack, as the lone striker, was struggling to create anything as the midfield were a little slow to catch up with play and help out. Then against the run of play a loose ball from a rebound found itself nicely into the path of the greenways winger who took it down the line and from the sweet cross into the centre of the box was tapped in by the Greenways forward for 1-0. The Bears kept pressing but nothing was going their way. Then 10 minutes later another rare attack from Greenways ended in a goal, this time from the right side. A cracking strike from outside the box into the top corner was too good for Harry to deal with.

The Bears weren’t done yet and kept their heads up. With 10 minutes of the half left and still no reply from The Bears a tactical switch was a turning point in the game. Changing from the lone striker to a 4-4-2 formation seemed to do the trick. The Bears looked a different team and Greenways struggled to contain them. With the goalie having to make some good saves and Finn hitting the post things were going The Bears way. The second half started as the first half ended. The Bears had a lot of the attacking play but Greenways had 3 or 4 set pieces from just outside the box which were managed effectively by The Bears defensive lines. Then a rare corner to the near post was flicked on by Tom Dunk which the goalie could not deal with and it ended in the back of the net. With a boost of confidence The Bears looked strong and another cracking goal, similar to the one against Kingshill came from Zack 5 minutes later to level the score. You would have thought that playing away and being 2-0 down at half time and on an unfamiliar surface, The Bears would settle for a draw but they looked hungry for a winner however some good defensive play from Greenways kept the scores level and it looked like ending that way until the last minute of the game. A free kick was awarded to The Bears after a hand ball on the edge of the pitch in a similar position to where Josh C just missed 15 minutes earlier. But giving Josh a second chance is not the best thing to do, didn’t miss this time! A sweet, powerful shot, too good for the keeper, hit the back of the net, almost in slow motion for the winner!  There was only enough time to kick off before the ref blew the final whistle for a well-deserved Bears win! Everyone played their part in beating a good team away from home (again) and on a difficult pitch! Well done lads!!
