First Team vs Deal Town

Match Date: 22 December 2018
Score: 2-1

By Allan Hefferon

In keeping with the previous meeting between these teams earlier in the season, this game proved to be of equal quality as good entertainment for both sets of supporters. Certainly during the earlier stages of the first half so the home side looked slightly more dominant with the wing runs of Harris Rodgers of being a particular threat. Indeed, it was as a result of a Rodgers run that the ball found Lee Scott for him to send a great chance wide of the post and almost immediately after saw the ball being scrambled off of the goal line. However as the half wore on so the visitors began to come more into the game, particularly with their brand of wing play and seeing an interesting contest between James Bessey-Saldanha and his marker Liam Hark which was to feature all afternoon. Saldanha though on one occasion chased down a ball to the bye-line to cut it back for Matt Garner to send a glorious chance over the bar. However the breakthrough did eventually come after 36 minutes when a clever back heel by Peter Williams allowed David Baranowski to pick out John Rogers to volley home past the outstretched arm of home goalkeeper James Tonkin.

Almost immediately after the start of the second half followed a series of simultaneous errors by Deal defenders. First when Lucian Scarlat seized upon a loose ball which in turn allowed Williams to put the ball narrowly past the post, then when that same player latched upon a back pass to run on goal only for a Tonkiin’s intervention to bring this run to an end. However almost immediately after saw Rogers send in a shot from close range to force a great save by Tompkins and for Scarlat to lash the ball back onto the post which allowed some respite from a period which could have seen the game being put out of sight. Fortunately for the hosts though they did manage to begin to 're-establish their composer and soon after Andy Miller, when finding himself in on goal, just failed to find an equaliser, which was to eventually come after 76 minutes, when as result a poor back pass, Connor Coyne was able run on and send the ball into the net. Unfortunately for them though the home side’s celebrations were to last just a minute when midfielder Rogers received the ball on the edge of the area to send it high into the net. This strike though was to be far from the last piece of the action, as following what seemed to be a genuine penalty appeal for a trip on Saldahna being turned down, so the ball was swept up field for it to be retained and sent into a crowded penalty area and for Scott Andrews to produce a wonderful save to keep the score intact. This then proved to be most important and with time now running out and Bearsted' s defence remaining determined so came the final whistle and for them to enjoy a well earned victory.
