It took the home side only 4 minutes to go in front when as a result of a deep corner from the right; Tom Fitzgerald was on hand to force a smart save from goalkeeper Scott Andrews only for the ball to find Paul Vines to send the ball back into the net. As the half wore on so it became apparent that this match was a contrast of styles with Bearsted's close play pitched against the more direct approach of their opponents which ultimately proved more effective on the day. Although Bearsted’s response was a positive one and indeed they were to go close on several occasions, notably when following some inter-play with David Baranowski, Reece Collins sent in a shot from close range only to be denied by the sheer prescience of home keeper Dan Ellis. However they were to remain susceptible on the break, a typical example being when after 32 minutes the ball was swept over Matt Bodkin to run onto goal to send the ball once more past Andrews.

Following the half time break so Chatham were to re-emerge in a lively way and were only to be denied another goal when Andrews was on hand to produce a remarkable point blank range double save from Byron Walker and immediately after once more had to be at his best in preventing Jon Pilbean from putting the game out of sight. However the visitors were in no mood to give up the cause and were still to present problems for the home defence and were nearly rewarded when Collins found enough space to send in a thunderous shot against the post and almost immediately after they were to have serious reason for disappointment, when the referee was to turn down their penalty appeals for what looked to be a clear trip on Jon Rogers. Added to this was also came another great chance when a Matt Hathaway through ball put Lucian Scarlat in on goal for him to see his effort being saved by advancing keeper Ellis. Equally though, full credit also had to go to the away defence, marshalled throughout by skipper Rob Lyall, for not only dealing with Chatham' s break-outs, but just before the end preventing a further goal with some tremendous goal line blocks and maintaining at least credible scoreline.
