First Team vs Crowborough Athletic

Match Date: 09 October 2018
Score: 1-3

This result was a particularly disappointing for a Bearsted side that had experienced a good run of recent wins. However based upon their positive start the suggestion might have been that they would come out of this game once more victorious. Certainly their seemingly more cultured style of play provided a series of early chances, notably when Jon Rogers set up Constantine Scarlat shoot wide and then when a Reece Collins shot was deflected into the side netting. Although the play itself was quite intense, the quality of passing was not helped by a particularly difficult playing surface. At this stage so saw Crowborough looking to seek out the wing runs of both Olalekan Bankole and Kion Parchmont. Indeed it was Bankole who was to force a smart save from Scott Andrews to deny him an opening goal. Although this threat was always there, so the visitors’ defence remained resolute and with Graham Andrews marshalling the back line, so they were able to cope with such situation. Unfortunately, the injury to Andrews midway through the half ultimately became a real game changer and with the necessary adjustments, so the hosts now found things a little more difficult and just before half time, Luke Leppard seized the ball in midfield to run on and send in a rasping shot from 25 yards, only for it to be matched by the fingertips of goalkeeper Andrews tipping the ball over the bar.

Following the half time break, so play was to flow from end to end with good chances falling to either side, notably when Parchmont headed wide and then seeing Ryan Croucher also missing a great opportunity. However as the half wore on so the play became a more feisty affair, the consequence of which seeing both the excessive brandishing of cards and the interruption of momentum to the game as a result of the endless free kicks being awarded. It was a great shame also, that during this period the situation was not helped by the unsavoury reaction of supporters behind the visitors’ goal. Unfortunately then so Bearsted were to fall behind when after 65 minutes the deadlock was broken, when a deep free kick from the right into the box resulted in an attempted clearance being directed onto a post and for the ball to fall to Leppard to score from 5 yards. Four minutes later came a second, when a deep free kick from a similar position, found Bankole, only for him to be pulled back and for a penalty being awarded leaving Jack Funnel to score from the spot. Interestingly enough though, the introduction of Peter Williams somehow began to unease the home defence and after 85 minutes he was able to link up with Sam Flisher for him to run on and fire the ball past home keeper Ryan Burbridge to set up the prospect of a revival. So much so that almost immediately after, this was almost to be the case, when a dribble by David Baranowskil took him to the bye-line to send over the perfect cross only for Scarlat to send the ball high over the bar. Unfortunately this miss proved to be a key moment, as with the game now entering the time added on, Bearsted once more found disappointment, when, after breaking up a home raid on goal, instead of being able to mount another attack, play was brought back by the referee and for the resultant free kick to be sent into the net by Elvis Onyenze before seeing him embark on a run back up field wheeling his shirt over his head celebration just like on the telly!
