15/9/18 Home vs Southborough FC

After 2 away wins in the last 2 weeks we knew S/borough fc would not only be tough opposition but would offer a different proposition than our previous 2 counterparts. With a mixture of youth and experience It didn't take long for the away side to start showing how well drilled and organised they actually were. With some good play through their midfield pairing and spreading play wide they started causing us problems on the edge of our area, we were dealing with the opening pressure well and began to start bouncing back with some attractive forward play of our own, Chris Carcary trying his best to bring the ball out from defense with Jack Sellens and Kaiyo on both flanks were beginning to get the better of the full backs with both putting in good crosses deep in the Southborough area only to be slightly ahead of our advancing forwards Ivan & Shaun, not putting these chances away was to be our downfall in the first half as the Southbourough midfield began to take advantage of some space left from our forward play. Through our somewhat sloppy passing and defending Southborough seized advantage and advanced through the middle of the pitch and in to the area to score their first (very soft), the second & third goals came not too long after which can only be described as chances we should have dealt with. These 3 goals were given away through some weak defending, naive play and continually handing over possession to our opponents who were to capitalise from our mistakes and take the game away from us by half time. We headed into the changing rooms 3-0 down with mounting to climb. So cue the hair dryer treatment, instructions were to roll our sleeves up and win the 2nd half. A change of formation and personnel was forthcoming. We welcomed back Max for his 1st minutes of the season and paired him with Callum at CB, the pair installed some instant calmness to our defensive line. We set about the task of reducing the deficit, with some improved possession play and a little more commitment. We started making inroads into the final 3rd but found it hard to break down the solid CB pairing of SFC and frustration was beginning to creep into our play. Giving a needless free kick away on our left hand side see a deep well hit cross into our penalty area which unfortunately for us was met from one of the the fore mention midfield pair heading into the top corner for a 4-0 scoreline and surely an unassailable lead. Although our heads were down a little credit should be handed to Charlie Busby for is never ending effort who continued to cause SFC problems all game and was brought down several times, one of which was in the box giving us our chance to score from the penalty spot, up stepped Jack Sellens to score with aplomb and give us our only goal of the game. A 4-1 home defeat was probably a fair result considering our disappointing first half performance but some credibility was returned with our 2nd half side committing a little more to the cause. Onwards and upwards from here on.
