First Team vs Newhaven

Match Date: 03 November 2018
Score: 1-0

Although this game was to be a tight affair throughout, from the start the visitors were to be the team to settle into a positive pattern of play and able to capitalise upon the amount of the misplaced passes of their opponents, during which time in Jason Souter and Tom Cocklin were having a particular effect. Unfortunately for them though they were never quite able to make the most of the opportunities they created and as the half wore on so the home side began to come more into the game and creating several chances of their own. However the deadlock was broken just before half time when a Peter Williams cross found the head of Maxwell Smith at the far post send the ball onto the arm of Rob Maula and for the referee to award a penalty, which eventually allowed WIlliams to send the ball back into the net from the spot.

Following the half time break so Bearsted found themselves more on the offensive and Newhaven had to thank their goalkeeper Jake Boss for keeping them in the game on numerous occasions, the first of which when saving a goalbound effort from David Baranowski. However in addition, the home side so nearly went in front, when on two occasions the woodwork was to deny them, the first time when a Graham Andrews header hit the foot of the post and then when a Reece Collins run on goal ended with him seeing his fiercely hit shot flying off the side of the same upright. As the game progressed so followed further opportunities for Collins each of which seeing him being denied once more by great Boss saves and in similar fashion John Rodger also failed to hit the back of net and still leaving the match very much in the balance. In this respect the visitors were not short of ambition and with the runs down the left by Ian Robinson proving a particular threat, but time after time these attacks never managed to break down a committed Bearsted defence marshalled so well all the game by their skipper Graham Andrews. This asset proved to be of most importance at a time when the sound of the final whistle seemed an eternity which eventually came and seeing them able to make it through to the next round.
