Second X1 vs Tonbridge Invicta

Match Date: 03 November 2018
Score: 6-0

Yet another away fixture in the league to Tonbridge Invicta for the Bears 2nd XI. This was a day where wrongly or rightly we were expected to come away with a win, good performance and a hat full of goals.Ako and Shaun Dowling returning and being thrust straight into the starting XI replacing 2 promoted players in Max and Kaiyo Peake. Starting the game on the front foot was an absolute must as providing Tonbridge with any kind of hope could and probably would have made things very difficult, and a strong and patient start was exactly what we made. Ross Borg continued with his great form making forward runs for fun in the early stages down the right hand side which was the case on the opposite flank with Bart's overlaps alongside Jack Sellins causing the home defense all manner of problems. And it was the right hand side that was to bring the opening goal of the game. Shaun Dowling neatly controlling the ball wide on the right and a neat down the line pass for the on running Ross Borg who sent in a equally neat cross for the centrally placed Kenny whose first time control brought the opportunity to shoot, Kenny then sent the defender and goalkeeper the wrong way with a fake shot (this was a complete air shot by the way LOL) and with his 2nd attempt finished into the half empty net with ease, 1-0 and settled controlled football followed. Good chances continued to be made, the improved form of Jack Sellins brought him openings from the left, 1 of which bringing a quality save to the goal keepers left hand side turning a curling effort around the far post, Brodie Fernandes seeing 2 long range efforts missing without troubling the keeper but the cracks were beginning to appear in the Tonbridge defenses. The 2nd goal was incoming, Jack sellins controlling a cross field pass in the inside left position, he shifted the ball on to his right foot setting him up for for a long range shot which he rifled passed the keeper from all of 25 yards (great strike), 2-0 and beginning to coast. Tonbridge offered some offensive play there after with some long range passing forcing several set plays around the half hour mark 1 of which brought Keeper Ben into action, having very little to do up to this point his concentration was needed when an effort towards the top right hand corner needing dealing with, flying to his right he managed somehow top get fingertips to the ball turning it over the bar, great save and still 2 to the good. That was the wake up call our defensive line very much needed for there after we became very solid with Harry Collins playing a very impressive roll in front of them collecting the ball at times very deep and beginning some good attacking plays. pushing for a 3rd we started to create some chances once again and it was our captain Ellis Chidley who benefited from some neat play through the midfield, the ball being sent into the area from the right sided Shaun Dowling, Ellis Chidley was on hand to collect the ball around the edge of the penalty area hitting a sound effort which deflected off the incoming defender to send the ball away from the keeper into the net and presumably confirming our 3 points for the day. Surely there was to be no way back for a Invicta side that were a little short of numbers having no substitutes to call on, their spirits never faltered and continued to contest which they should be commended on. Our goals were not over , Brodie Fernandes finishing off what was the move of the day tapping in from 6 yards out after at least 10 passes from our midfield area with a final pass from the right to the in rushing Fernandes to make it 4-0. Ellis Chidley then taking things into his own hands as he picked the ball up from an inside left pass from Jack Sellins, knocking the ball past an Invicta defender he sent a long range shot past the keeper for his 2nd of the game and 2nd for the season, 5-0 and only half time. Invicta's shortage of players was to be their downfall as fitness and rotation from the Bears had a massive baring on the 2nd half, spaces began to appear allowing us to heap more and more pressure on the invicta team.
The 1 goal that came in the 2nd half came from our veteran defender Ben Reader(he wont thank me for saying that) climbing the highest of all from a Jack Sellins corner Ben met the header with force, with the ball flying into the corner an invicta defender managed to put himself between the ball and the goal, Bens momentum carried him forward on to the returning ball to then smash the ball in from 4 yards out and complete our scoring for the day 6-0. Although there were several good chances that followed we were unable to convert.
Man of the match performances from Jack Sellins and captain Ellis Chidley were definately the order of the day, Ross Borg, Ben Reader, Bart and out of position Ako were solid for the most part, Harry collins was very impressive playing the holding midfield role, Brodie creating and probing the opposition back line, Kenny Shaun & Jack also giving the opposition back line plenty to think about. A 3rd game in a row with out conceding a goal means we climb to 2nd in the table on goal difference

Congratulations to Kevin and his team for reaching the next stage of the FA Vase. A 1-0 win against Newhaven. A great weekend for the BEARS!!!
