First Team vs Horley Town

Match Date: 10 August 2019
Score: 2-2

By Allan Hefferon.

Played throughout in difficult windy conditions this tie was to be a closely contested affair with great opportunities falling for both sides, but at the end of the day perhaps the final score was the right one. Certainly it was the visitors who were to start the brightest and indeed after just 3 minutes it was Emmanuiel Olunasemo who almost capitalized upon an under-hit back pass and seemingly brought down by advancing home goalkeeper George Hyde, only for the referee to turn down what looked to be a certain penalty and very soon after it was home skipper Adam Pullin who came to the rescue by producing a fine goal line clearance in denying once more a goalbound Olunasemo shot. However as the game began to settle down so play became more evenly balanced and seeing the home side's James McGilligott and Kerran Boylan both going narrowly wide, whilst the pace of the visitor’s wide men was also causing concern for their opponents, in particular when Lucian Scarlat found himself in on goal only to be denied by goalkeeper Hyde. The breakthrough though did finally arrive after 31minutes when a right wing corner by James Bessey Salbahma found the head of Lexan Majayebe to head home low into the corner of the net. Unfortunately for Bearsted, very soon after they had to suffer once more, what looked to be an ill judged decision not to award a penalty what looked to be for most an obvious handball? This incident though seemed to inspire Horely more in pursuit of an equaliser and they were to be awarded after 43 minutes, when following some good approach play the ball was not sufficiently defended and allowed McGilligott to send the ball back into the net. In addition to this immediately after,Alex Barbary was guilty of not adding another by firing over the bar just before the half time break.Following the restart, Bearsted had to thank their goalkeeper Ethan Collen for maintaining the scoreline for producing a fine save in denying Boylan from taking the lead. However this came after 63 minutes for visitors, when Ryan Croucher seized upon a loose ball in midfield to run on and thrash the ball home from just outside the penalty area. As was before though, so the lead was to be short lived and as a result of some chaotic defending, the ball found Barbary only too pleased to score from close range. With the clock now running down so this game was anyone's to win with both side's both looking for a winner, whilst at the same time having to be mindful of not conceding an opportunity that opportunity fell to Dale Burgess when sending the ball wide, the result of which being a replay on Tuesday evening.
