Second X1 vs Whitstable

Match Date: 31 August 2019
Score: 2-0

our opening game of the season and a visit to Whitstable to play against a team who are expecting honors this season. With players still on holiday and several debutantes in the line up this was always going to be a tough fixture but also will be a yard stick to where we will be moving forward for this upcoming season.
Whitstable put us under pressure from the get go forcing the ball wide to both wings in the opening few minutes and in the 3rd minute beat the offside to be clear through on goal but the center forward’s effort being expertly saved by one of the before mentioned debutantes Josh Knowles in goal in an adults match for the first time saving with his feet to his left, from this save we began to get ourselves into the match, Phoenix Ward beginning to ruffle the feathers of the Whitsable back line with some aggressive pressing forcing mistakes and unrest within the Whitstable ranks. The opening 25 mins was now becoming a very good spell from us, Roan Ferguson curling an effort wide and Brodie Fernandes firing a shot straight at the keeper, both efforts from outside of the area. Fernandes was becoming a pain in the side of the Whitstable defense and if for a bit more accuracy he would have made it 1-0 when he saw the Whitstable keeper off his line and tried the lob from 30 yards, again his effort missing the target but the Bears pressure was mounting. Our goal coming from the mounting pressure resulting in a corner, this was well worked and the ball heading to the far post where Brodie had peeled away from his marker and slotted his header powerfully in at the back post and a well deserved goal and more so a well deserved lead and 1-0 Bears at the break.

2nd half - and it started much the same as the first, Our young keeper Josh called into action early on again making a fine save low to his left, this time diving towards his post to keep us in front and dealing well with the expected fast start from the home side. We sprung into action on the 50 min mark with some aggressive play in our midfield Harry Collins, Jake Sanger and Brodie Fernandes now winning there battles with some aggressive tackling and fine forward play which was to be the breaking of Whitstable, after some fine forward play the whaitstable defense cleared the ball but only to Phoenix Ward from all of 30 yards took 1 touch to control and sent a fine looping shot catching the keeper in no mans land and 2-0 it was and a mountain to climb for the home team - and to be fair they tried making a triple substitution and a change of formation. our defense stood strong with Fozz, James Benge, Rhys Powell and John Turner putting in fine accomplished performances too keep the oyster boys at bay. Chris Carcary coming back on from an earlier injury secured our increasing frailties in midfield due to some tiredness caused by some real hard work for 60-70 mins his tackling set the tone for the rest of the team for the final stages of the match. Ward had run his own legs off up front and was replaced by Fraser Daniels who put their defence under pressure with his shutting down and applying pressure across the back line carrying on from Phoenix’s very good work

Overall a great performance from all with special thanks to Fozz who no doubt will find himself in the 1st teams plans for his commitment and experience was gratefully received by all concerned with the reserve set up. Well done mate.
