First Team vs Deal Town

Match Date: 21 January 2020
Score: 2-2

Irrespective of the final score this turned out to be very disappointing for a Bearsted side who had mainly dominated the game with their pace and movement. Played on a rapidly frosting pitch, on several occasions during the opening spell they were to go close to opening the score with great chances falling to Emmanual Oluwasemo steering the ball wide of the post and David Baranowski hitting the bar over back-peddling goalkeeper James Tomkin. However it was the home side that were to go on front after 25 minutes when a Jack Penny corner from the left found Kane Smith to volley home from close range. Undaunted by this set back the visitors were to still undaunted by this set back and were to equalise on 36 minutes when a David Baranowski cross found Mateusz Wlodarczayk to set up John Rogers to fire high into the net from just outside to penalty area.
Following the return after the half time break, the Bears were to lose key central defender Lekan Majayege through injury and were forced to reshape their back line. The momentum of play did though remain the same with most of the chances during this spell falling to the visitors and seeing Lucian Scarlat, Rogers, James Bessie-Saldahna all going close and Peter Williams once more hitting the bar. However in reply Deal’s Josh Maughan headed over and the wing runs of Steve O’ Brien were at times being of particular concern, before the game moved into extra time and after 98 minutes they were to go in front when a ball sent into the box was swept in by front man Ben Chapman. Once more though Bearsted were to pull a goal back when Saldahna was on hand to put the ball over the line after a goalmouth scramble.
The coming of penalties although always being an unsatisfactory so it was the home side who were to win the tie with due credit going to Tonkin for saving 3spot kick efforts leaving Bearsted wondering how they managed to lose It?
